The ORDER OF THE BRIDGE BUILDERS OF ST. JAMES, whose task it was to build bridges in order to make it easier for travellers to cross rivers and who also ran hospices, also used the Order of St. John as an example for its charitable organisation.
The French branch of the order (de l'Hôpital d'Altopascio) was given the statutes of the Order of St. John by
Pope Gregory IX.
